Three E-cigarette Myths… Debunked!

In relative terms, e-cigarettes are a fairly new product – the patent for the design was only filed in 2003, with the first e-cigarette appearing on the market in China later that same year. In addition, it is only over the past few years that e-cigarettes have become popular in the United Kingdom, Ireland and throughout Europe. As a result, there are many rumours and myths circulating online about e-cigarettes, covering everything from how similar they are to traditional tobacco based cigarettes, to what impact they could have on your health – this may be seen by some as ‘scaremongering’, but there are a lot more articles circulating the internet showing e-cigarettes in a bad light than there are detailing the benefits, most notably the impact it has had for users trying to kick the habit of normal cigarettes. Users should be in the know when it comes to e-cigarettes, and so with that in mind, we’ve debunked three of the most common e-cigarette myths out there right now, to help you vape with peace of mind.

Myth 1: E-cigarettes won’t help you quit smoking

Many people use e-cigarettes to help them quit smoking, so the idea that they won’t help you is just a myth. While they may be more effective for some people than others, there is no reason to state that they can’t help you quit, especially when used as part of a plan along with other quitting mechanisms, like patches and pills.

In fact, according to a study on tobacco cigarette users who smoked 20 or more a day has shown the following results over a 6 month period:

  • Of those using a nicotine patch, only 8.2% managed to quit entirely.
  • Of those using a nicotine gum, only 7.7% managed to quit entirely.
  • However, of the tobacco users who moved to e-cigarettes, a staggering 70% managed to stay of tobacco cigarettes, and further still, over 30% of those quit using any form of nicotine altogether after a further 6 months!

So, if this study is to be believed, tobacco cigarette users who attempt to quit using e-cigarettes over a patch or gum alternative are much more likely to stop smoking.

Myth 2: E-cigarettes contain antifreeze

This myth gets repeated a lot online, but it simply isn’t true. The confusion comes from the fact that e-liquids contain an ingredient that is also found in antifreeze, propylene glycol. However, propylene glycol is used to make antifreeze safe, and to reduce the possibility of it causing lasting harm should it consumed by humans. So really, although they share a common ingredient, there is no factual basis on which you can suggest that e-cigarettes contain antifreeze – it just isn’t true. However, choosing the right e-liquid is important. Consumers should read the ingredients as cheaper e-liquids may contain higher amounts of PG (Propylene Glycol) compared to a premium range of e-liquid which commonly would contain more VG (vegetable glycerin).

Myth 3: E-cigarettes give off toxic second hand smoke

Vaping is so called because the leftover gas vaporizes when it is released in the air, and this means that e-cigarettes don’t give off any so-called ‘second-hand smoke‘; the vapor disappears almost immediately, causing no harm to anyone around you. Therefore, there is no truth in the statement that e-cigarettes give off toxic second-hand smoke – it is just a myth.

  2. Research on e-cigarettes is very new—there is so much we still don’t know. However, preliminary research reveals that diethylene glycol and other toxic carcinogens are found in e-cigarettes. Why take the risk?

    You are completely right, “There is no proof that e-cigarettes have helped people quit smoking” Is a myth. There is a ton of evidence showing that many people have made a wise choice to consider electronic cigarettes as an alternative to tradition (tobacco) smoking.
