New to Vaping? 7 of your Most Important Questions – Answered!

If you’re new to the vaping world, you probably still have a lot of questions– and that’s normal. Vaping is not the same as smoking, and actually that’s why we do it. Here is a lost of 7 common questions – answered to help you get started with e-cigs. Share this list with other new vapers or your friends who are considering making the switch and help them answer those lingering questions they have about electronic cigarettes.

1. What Kind of E-Cig Should I Get?

Once you’ve decided to give vaping a try, this is the first question you begin to ask. The truth is, there is no blanket answer for this question, which is why if you talk to many vapers they have tried many different models, brand and types of e-cigs before settling on their favorites. That’s not really too much unlike cigarettes is it? How many smokers continue to puff on the same brand that they first tried?

The question you should really be asking is what kind of vaping experience you want, and that should lead you to a good place to start. If you are looking for a hand to mouth experience that is the most similar to regular cigarettes, you may try a disposable model or cig-a-like, that is activated when you take a puff. Other devices, like most rechargeable models, vape pens and other styles like vape mods have buttons you push to deliver the vapor.

You can also consider how customizable you want your devices. With vape styles (vs e-cig styles) you are allowed much more freedom, but they also require more maintenance than a disposable model. Consider these factors into your decision making, but remember sometimes trial and error is the best way to find what’s right for you.

2. How Much Is it Going to Cost Me Up Front?

It is true, the cost of starting up with e-cigs is more than just going out to buy a pack of smokes. Still don’t let that deter you, it might not be as much as you think. Going for a basic kit if you are looking for a rechargeable model is the best way to get started, and many of them are extremely affordable. Most start-up kits will range from about $20 to $75, but some advanced devices will be much more. Take a look at our best rechargeable e-cig kits to give you an idea of what you’ll need to get started.

3. Will Vaping Save Me Money?

While it may seem like it costs more upfront, the truth is vaping provides a huge cost savings over the long haul when compared with regular cigarettes. A pack-a-day smoker can spend anywhere from $1,500 a year in a low-tax state all the way to about $5,000 in New York where cigarettes average around $13 a pack. On average across the country, the cost of smoking regular cigarettes rings up at about $2,250 a year.

If you opt for the rechargeable e-cigarette option you can purchase e-liquid cartridges at their average price of $2.50 each and that a pack a day smoker using rechargeable e-cigs could save up to $1,800 a year.

You can save even more money by employing a refillable tank system. Rather than buying replaceable cartridges, you can buy vials of e-liquid and fill up your own tank or cartomizer. Just $8.00 worth of e-liquid can last for about 10 days for an average smoker. That means your savings is even greater, in fact for an average smoker using refillable tanks adds up to about $1,900 in savings a year.

4. How Do I Fill my Tank?

If filling your e-cig tank worries you at all, no problem. you can always opt for disposable models or pre-filled cartomizers. However, to get the biggest variety of flavors, and the best value for your buck, you may want to consider learning how to fill up your own tanks and cartomizers with quality e-juice.

There are great YouTube videos if you need more instruction, but here are a few tips that always come in handy:

  • Make sure you thoroughly clean your cartomizer, or tank, every time you refill it
  • Keep e-juice away from the center tube in the tank
  • Let the e-juice soak in for a few minutes after filling before you use it

It’s a good idea to have a few backup tanks just in case something goes wrong, but honestly that’s not likely, it is super easy.

5. Do I Have to Replace my Battery?

Yes, yes you will. When? That’s the real question. There’s really no way to tell if a battery is going to last for the long haul when you first buy it. While there are plenty of people who claim their batteries last years, almost everyone I know also has experienced one that died within a few months.

You should consider buying a back-up battery right off the bat, so you don’t get caught without. Also buy American, the quality is more consistent and you’ll be happier with the end product.

6. How do I Choose my e-Liquid Strength?

One of the major benefits of e-cigarettes being able to choose your nicotine level and tailor your vaping experience. Nicotine strength in e-cigarettes is measured by the milligram of nicotine that is contained within one milliliter of solution. A user can estimate what density of electronic cigarette liquid will bring them satisfaction based on their previous smoking habits. E-liquids come in a variety of strengths varying from non-nicotine or 0 mg for user who just want to experiencing vaping, to XXXHigh Density, or 48 mgs, for users who smoke heavily, around two packs a day. An average pack a day smoker will look for a nicotine strength around 18 to 24 mg, but remember you can always try different strengths to decide what is best for you.

7. Are E-Cigs Really Healthier than Cigarettes?

Ask any vaper and they’ll tell you how they feel as a result of switching from cigarettes to e-cigs. The truth is though, we are still waiting for more extensive research to be done. E-cigarettes are such a new product, that long term research simply doesn’t exist yet. What we do know is e-cigarettes contain no cancer causing carcinogens and far less harmful constituents than that of regular cigarette smoke and tar. For some people, they work really well as replacements for cigarettes, and therefore can give any user the opportunity to cut back on the harmful smoke that cigarettes produce. In addition, using e-cigarettes eliminates secondhand smoke and is better for the environment and the people around you, in general.

  1. I’d like to know why my mod doesn’t fire for around five seconds, but all the others I’ve seen fire immediately. No name on mod unit but it uses 18650

    1. That sounds like a defective unit. The circuit should be complete as soon as you press the button. Try cleaning the contact points where the tank connects to the main battery unit, if that doesn’t work, you should probably replace it for safety concerns.

    2. I think you need to add good quality e-liquid with your e-cigarettes. Try with followings Marcellus, Walter White, Pinkman, V. Vega, Norris, Lou Forigno, Bane, Frank Underwood, Dicaprio, Harley Quinn, and Jason Bourne

  2. If you are new to vaping, using a disposable one is the best idea in my opinion. It will help you decide whether vaping is for you or not. You can then decide to invest on a good e cigarette after trying a few. In case of saving money, I think you’ll save a lot when you vape in long term basis as you’ll become healthy unlike if you keep smoking in which you’ll end up with lung cancer.

    1. I would LOVE to be able to reap the benefits of “vaping” and smoke as few traditional cigarettes as possible, but I seem to experience SO MANY problems when it comes to getting them to work. Granted I have only purchased the refillable vape Cigarettes, that need to be charged regularly, coils occasionally replaced. It seems that it is only 1/5 times using the e cigarettes that I am able to get a pleasurable inhale, exhale etc. The rest of the time, the thing just won’t work for me. new coil, fully charged, carefully filled and I get “Gurgling”, liquid in my mouth (ugh) and yes, I have tried going really easy on how much I put in. Does ANYONE else out there experience these problems??

      1. Joanne, What devices are you using? If you are using a cig-a-like or vape pen, you may want to consider a bigger device. Let me know what you are using and maybe we can get you paired with the right device.

      2. I had many of those same probs, I took a leap and thought u pay for what you get with most things,
But, I’d have to hold the button on my “lava” pen style vape with 1000mah batt and suck, then it would time out, and do it about 5 times to get a lung full only to get half the hit I felt I needed, I’m in Aussie and the lava I mentioned is the cheapest rechargeable type or starter type u could get really apart from the cig looking ones, and it sells for about $45/70 depending,
So while it was gurgling like I was sucking a tube of spit (sorry it’s gross) lol.. I was sucking away and just couldn’t get it, only recently now vape shops have appeared in Melbourne Australia, I walked past a shop and saw a few larger units, so I went in and grabbed a unit that was rec to me as a “good starter/intermediate” unit, it was the coolfire 4 “INNOKIN TECHNOLOGY” brand, it was over double the batt size, adj watt/Volt/oled screen, adapter for diff tank style/types etc, and that was it!!
One quick hit on the button for 2/3sec and I was blowing huge clouds of smoke, tasted good, was silent, and gave me the hit I wanted, granted it was $120 Aussie, it was a trial and error thing for me, haven’t looked back so far, I was spending $65 ev 2 weeks on smokes, now down to $25 on smokes and having smokes left over, I’m just starting to play around with diff tanks and diff MG nicotine and juices/coils and things, but I love it, our house is non smoking, I can lay in bed and puff away, on the train the trams, I’m doin it, lol..
Don’t worry about burning the place down, my lungs don’t feel any discomfort nor my throat, I guess I’ll just keep going up from here, once I’ve modded this unit out as much as poss, and need more wattage etc..
I reckon, go a step further if u really want to vape or get what you were hoping for, spend that bit extra, and you won’t regret it, that’s my exp and how I’ve become hooked and drawn into the world of vaping and e-cig and cutting down real cigs without any hassle..
best of luck to ya Brutha

  3. I just bought 2 batterys for my new smok alien 220w and the batterys I was given in the shop are Aspire 18650 3.7v Li-ion 1800mAh super high discharge 40A and Basen 18650 3100mAh 3.7v High drain 40A and I was wondering if it’s safe to use these 2 batterys together

    1. Eric,

The Smok will work with both of those batteries – at the same time – and since the Smok has overcharge protection you should be fine.

  4. I’m looking for something that will allow a smok mod to use salt nic juices is there like a conversion kit or maybe an rba or something I can do I can’t find high nicotine juices that aren’t salt nic based products I need to find the right juice or a way to use salt nic…. I have a SmokTech Alien 220w mod with a SmokTech TFV8 tank that uses a T8 coil but what I’ve seen there are about 5 different choices in coils also an rba kit to allow more controlled and self tailored vaping can ANYONE OFFER ME ADVICE OR ANYTHING
