The Department of Transportation has now issued a ruling that will ban electronic cigarettes from being included in checked luggage when you travel via airplane.

This ruling is not incredibly surprising as there have recently been a few cases of e-cigarettes exploding when they were in the cargo hold of passenger planes. According to the report released by the DOT, there was an incident on August 9, 2014 at Boston’s Logan Airport that involved an e-cigarette explosion which forced the passengers to evacuate the aircraft. A few months later on January 4, 2015, at LAX, a late arriving checked bag caught fire when the electronic cigarette that was inside overheated.

Exploding e-cigarettes have been in the news a lot lately, and while the majority of exploding cases happen during charging, faulty batteries or poorly made devices can result in explosions even when the device is not in use or charging. The new rule, which will go into effect in two weeks, does not exclude e-cigarettes from making the flight entirely. You are still allowed to bring electronic cigarettes with you, however, with your carry-on items. This enables them to be properly monitored and handled if an explosion occurs. Users are not allowed to use their e-cigarettes, or to charge their devices at any time during the flight.

The DOT also announced that they would be amending their rules regarding smoking and e-cigarettes. They have said in the past that the ban on smoking tobacco products on passenger planes does extend to electronic cigarettes, however, they now plan to add the proper terminology to include e-cigarettes explicitly in their ban on passenger flights.

Just because this new rule is being enforce, it doesn’t mean your vaping experience has to be ruined. When traveling via airplane with your electronic cigarette you can keep in mind a few tips to make life a little less painful at the airport.

  1. Charge up Before you Leave – You won’t want to be caught with a dead battery when you get to your destination, or if you get caught up in delays and need to head to a designated area. With the new rule specifying that you can’t charge in flight, you’ll want to make sure you have a full battery when you’re off the plane.
  2. Limit the E-Liquid – Remember the airline rules and don’t take too much e-liquid with you. You can of course check e-liquid if you will be gone for an extended period, but in general most people wouldn’t take anywhere near the airline’s 3 ounce carry-on limit.
  3. Think about Disposable – Want to go for easy? Think about buying a few disposable devices for the trip. You can get your vaping fix, but when you don’t have have to worry about charging or refilling your e-cig you will have that much more time to relax when you’re traveling.

Traveling on the airlines can be stressful; when you are leaving town the last thing you want to be is without an e-cigarette. Knowing the rules helps you become a responsible and prepared vaper ready for any situation.
